WITH THERE HAVING BEEN A LOT OF CONVERSATION TAKING PLACE ON MENTORS OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS - ON HOW TO FIND, CHOOSE AND APPROACH THEM, I THOUGHT THIS TED ARTICLE ON THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MENTOR THAT ADD VALUE MIGHT HELP OTHERS CONTEMPLATING THESE QUESTIONS WHEN CONSIDERING BOTH WHERE THEY MIGHT START TO LOOK WITHIN THEIR EXISTING AND EXTENDED NETWORKS, AND HOW TO IDENTIFY WHO MIGHT ACTUALLY BE A SUITABLE MATCH FOR THEM. I REALLY LIKE THE CONCEPT OF HAVING MORE THAN ONE MENTOR; EACH BRINGING SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO THE TABLE (INDEED SOME OF MY “MENTORS” ARE WOMEN I’VE NEVER EVEN MET, BUT PROVIDE MENTORSHIP WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING: THEIR PUBLIC ACTIONS, GUIDANCE, DECISIONS, ETHICS, MORALS, VALUES, CHAMPIONING OF CAUSES, ATTITUDE AND WAY OF WORKING, SO I ALSO DON’T BELIEVE ALL OF THEM NEED BE WOMEN YOU KNOW OR WORK WITH ON A ONE TO ONE BASIS) - BE THAT INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE, SHARED CAREER PATHS/LIFE SITUATIONS, EMOTIONAL/PERSONAL CONNECTION, ROLE MODELLING OR SOMETHING ELSE THAT EMPOWERS YOU. WHETHER IT’S A SPEAKER AT AN EVENT WHOSE STORY RESONATES, A PEER IN A DIFFERENT INDUSTRY WHO KNOWS YOU AND SEES YOUR POTENTIAL - AN ADVOCATE FOR THE PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL YOU - OR A FORMER BOSS WHO ALWAYS HAD YOUR BACK...IF YOU FEEL SAFE, THERE’S RECIPROCAL VALUE AND IT FEELS RIGHT, IT’S ALWAYS WORTH AN ASK.
